Etching - 32cm x 14cm - Mimi van der Merwe (born 1934, Malmesbury, South Africa) is a distinguished painter, printmaker, and etcher. She studied Fine Art at Stellenbosch Technical College under Edith ten Kate, followed by advanced studies in Brussels and Paris, where she specialized in etching and was awarded the Prix de l’Atelier and a French government bursary.
Van der Merwe has exhibited extensively in South Africa and internationally, including solo shows in Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban, Stellenbosch, Paris, and Harstad, Norway. Since establishing her Pretoria studio in 1983, she has taught painting, printmaking, and drawing, mentoring artists and students, while hosting regular exhibitions at prominent venues.
Her work explores the human form and face as reflections of mental and spiritual states, emphasizing the interplay of color, shape, and texture. She has contributed to numerous publications and authored a handbook on printmaking techniques.
